House-Tree-Person (HTP) Projective Drawing Analysis Course
What is House-Tree-Person (HTP) Projective Drawing?
House-Tree-Person Projective Drawing (HTP, for short) is a widely used psychological projection analysis tool among psychologists. Most psychological tests available today primarily rely on questionnaires or multiple-choice formats. However, their accuracy can be compromised by personal biases or the limitations of the answer options provided.
In contrast to traditional psychological tests, HTP allows participants to freely draw images from their minds. Psychologists can directly interpret these drawings, as the images themselves act as a direct expression of the unconscious mind. Drawings can reflect an individual’s inner world, personality traits, behavioral tendencies, values, and aspirations. While drawing, individuals unknowingly express their inner states. A few simple illustrations can convey messages far richer and more direct than thousands of words.
Therefore, House-Tree-Person Projective Drawing is regarded as one of the more accurate methods for analyzing personality.

What are the applications of the HTP method?
- Teachers can directly understand students’ problems, especially those who haven't yet fully developed verbal expression skills.
- Human Resources professionals can assess candidates’ capabilities and identify the most suitable individuals for a role more efficiently.
- Couples can use HTP to explore each other’s thoughts, enhance communication, and improve harmony in their relationship.
- Parents can understand their children’s abilities, self-image, and interpersonal relationships, leading to better encouragement and communication.
- For the drawer themselves, the HTP drawing reveals one’s current psychological state, self-image, and strengths, supporting self-awareness, personal growth, emotional management, and better relationships.
Course Features
- The course is interactive, helping participants gain in-depth understanding of HTP drawings.
- It uses discussions and case studies to ensure practical learning and application in a short time.
- The curriculum is designed to be simple and easy to understand, progressing step-by-step from basic to advanced levels so learners can clearly grasp and apply the techniques.

The Overprotected by Elders” Drawing
Overprotected Next Generation
In the HTP drawing shown below, the house and person in the center are surrounded by trees on all sides. The person inside the house looks very happy.
This drawing reflects that the individual receives a lot of care and attention from elders within their family or household. Such drawings are becoming increasingly common in today’s society, especially in families with only one child.
People who produce such drawings often demonstrate stronger dependency and weaker independence. This is because they have rarely needed to face challenges alone — most things are handled for them by their parents or elder family members. As a result, their ability to act independently and manage situations may be underdeveloped.
The HTP projective drawing not only helps to understand a person’s inner world but can also be used to identify their strengths and weaknesses.

Sample Analysis of a House-Tree-Person (HTP) Drawing
One drawing can already convey a wealth of personal information. Careful observation of each line and stroke can reveal much.
The artist is a man born in the post-1980s generation. In his HTP drawing, he drew a tree on the left, a stick figure not far from the tree, and a house on the right.
The tree’s branches resemble an open hand reaching toward the sky, reflecting the artist’s desire to achieve more. The figure standing close to the tree suggests that, at this stage of his life, the artist is primarily focused on career and the pursuit of success.
The house is located to the far right, indicating that the artist sees family life as something planned for the future. The door of the house has no handle, which suggests he finds it difficult to form deep connections with others. The horizontal lines on the roof symbolize that he is currently feeling troubled or worried.
This is just a basic analysis of one HTP drawing. With more advanced skills, you can further explore a person’s inner thoughts through their artwork, promoting better communication and trust. Whether in family, career, or personal life, this tool can be extremely useful.
